nearest government hospital authorised to conduct medico - legal examination. She need not go to the
thana. The hospital will summon the concerned police officers who will register FIR. Medico-legal examination
will then be got done by the police.
3.Narrate the incident to a friend or family member in detail

6.If possible write details about the appearance of the rapist. How did he look like? How was his accent voice?
What type of clothes was he wearing etc? If you know him, name the person with details.

Each and every FIR of rape is personally seen by the Deputy Commissioner of Police of that district.
Do not be afraid to name the rapist. The police will have to arrest him. In most cases, they do arrest the
culprit if he is identified.

7.At the time of medical examination, the rape victim must take a set of extra clothes with her to be worn
after the medical examination because in most cases police seals the victim’s clothes worn at the time of
rape. She should insist on sealing of clothes in her presence.
8.She should insist that the doctor should clearly mention in his report any kind of injury in vagina or
surrounding area, thighs, any kind of lacerations or minor scratches, any spot of semen on her body/clothes,
hairs of the rapist, any blood spot. The mental condition of the female victim should be mentioned. She
should insist that three vaginal swabs be taken from posterior, middle and interior. Traces of semen can
then be matched with the blood group of the accused.
9.If required the victim can take a lawyer with her to the police station.
10.The victim can/must demand the accused to be examined medically immediately at the earliest. This would
aid in getting any sort of evidence from the body of the accused. This will be possible only if the rapist is
immediately arrested.
11.Any object such as cigarette butt/spectacles/hanky/watch etc should be left untouched; it should be
carried by piece of cloth/gloves in hand and safely handed over to the police custody. It can be sent for
DNA examination if it has blood samples/ semen samples of the rapist.
12.The place and situation of the incidence should be left as it is until the police thoroughly inspects /
examines the place. There is likelihood of getting any evidence such as semen, bloodstains, hair of the
rapist etc. from the place of the incident.

Things to remember / to be taken care of.

1.The police person to whom the complaint has been made, cannot examine the body of the victim. He must
take the detailed report or information of the incidence duly signed by the victim, eyewitness (if any) and
himself.

time. If required the police can call the victim to the police station and still if the victim if not willing to go

this right is violated she can complain to higher authorities. The Police should come to her residence for
further Inquiry. This assurance has been given by no less than Commissioner of Police .
