In the
Lolab region of Kashmir lived a hard working man called Nabira with his wife Rehmat.
Nabira used to work in the fields of a land owner and for all the hard work he used to get
only one third of the produce. The rest three fourths would go to the land owner.
Unable to
make both ends meet, Nabira one day decides to acquire his own land. With the help of the
local patwari he buys a barren piece of land
and starts all the hard work of clearing the ground with his wife and friends.
The land
however belonged to a djinn who asks for the
top half of the produce of whatever Nabira grows in the field. Clever Nabira grows turnips
and radish and fools the djinn. The djinn then asks for the lower half of the produce.
Nabira and his wife cultivate wheat and fool the djinn.
Furious,
the djinn then asks for the top half and the bottom half of the produce leaving the middle
portion for Nabira. This time Nabira grows maize and outsmarts the djinn once again. When
the djinn asks Nabira the secret of being so clever, Nabira replies that he is a Kujinn ,
a more powerful djinn and scares the djinn away from his land. Nabira and his wife now
keep the whole produce for
themselves.
