The Craft Village. The concept of taking tradition to contemporary doorsteps. The idea of taking legendary arts and historic crafts to the heart of modern day civilization. The main objective of Shilparamam - Crafts Village is to encourage arts and keep the vanishing art in the world, which is heading to technology surpassing our culture and heritage.

So in the environment that's urban-friendly, a Craft Village is created. To preserve traditions that brings life to our culture. To educate people about their heritage. And in the process, give recreation a new and almost forgotten dimension.

A dimension that provides opportunities to cultural groups to develop and improve their techniques. A dimension that provides opportunities to rural and urban artists to interact. For ideas to flow. For visions to integrate. A dimension that provides opportunities to artisans to market without being marketers. To promote without being professionals. To reach appreciative homes and hearts, without using middlemen.

Crafts Village was inaugurated by late Dr. M Channa Reddy on 11th March 1995 along with
former Governor of Tamilnadu and Chairman of South Zone Cultural Center and it was named as "Shilparamam".The main objective was to keep the arts and crafts alive. To keep alive the arts, to help crafts thrive, to give our culture and heritage a much-needed boost, this is one of seven such centers formed all over the country. In its drive to bring age-old skills and centuries old magic close to today's civilized world, the Center is setting up Crafts Villages close to cities.

Ours is a heritage of creativity. Of artistic manifestations that centuries ago mingled with day to day life. Of skills and crafts that at their simple best, etched for themselves a special niche in history. While our innate nature and instincts are today being given vast canvasses to paint on, our legacies are fading into the past with modernization and urbanization.

Art forms are disappearing. Craft styles are vanishing. And our very culture is dying. The coming generations must not only know about the art and craft of their forefathers, they must be able to carry forward the tradition. Because if we allow our past to die, our future has no life. If we permit our inherited glories to be eclipsed, the future will only beckon us into darkness.
