designer Tutu Taneja for you.
She is the granddaughter of the late
Maharajah of Jind, When you mention the word block printing, the first name you can think
of has to be Tutu Taneja's. Over the past 30 years or so, she has mastered in the art of
block printing and designing. Actresses, tourists, rich and middle class women, all buy
her collection.
Operating from a small room which is a part
of her sprawling mansion in Banjara Hills, Tutu is involved in every stage of her work.
Under her discerning eyes, her workers execute all the printing, dyeing and alterations.
Her blocks range in styles from floral to graphic depictions. The blocks are printed on
either cotton or organdy. The prices (starting at Rs. 550 for a saree) are incredibly
reasonable for exclusive designer wear.
Her inspiration has been the rich culture,
intricate jewelry, and costumes of Hyderabad. "I used to walk for hours at the
Golconda Fort. The arches, the designs on them are so beautiful
I could put the same
thing in a different way on my clothes."
Her success is a standing testimony to her
dedication and talent. One can say that Tutu has added value, quality and character to the
