Ritu
Kumar, work reflects the passion and commitment she has for the revival and
continuation of traditional Indian art is undoubtedly the queen of Indian fashion.
She prefers to be known as a 'revivalist'
rather than a designer and categorises herself as a printer and embroiderer. By blending
the Indian traditional craftmen with contemporary innovations, over the years, Ritu
has explored and worked with various crafts -- block printing, Kasauti, Chikankari,
Zardozi, Bandhani and Kalamkari
She started with-- four block printers and a
few tables in a village near Calcutta -- Ritu is today the undisputed queen of Indian
fashion. She introduced boutique culture in India, Ritu collections are available
throughout India and until recently, in the UK, . It is Ritu who has, over the years
, introduced Indian fashion to the world, with Princess Diana and Jemima Khan
wearing original Ritu ensembles.
A Ritu Kumar original is a class apart and
for ever in vogue. Her work reflects of balance between colour, style and craft -- a Ritu
creation is always a best seller.
Ritu's role as revivalist goes beyond the
business of retail design. A member of the Board of Governors of NIFT, she is also on the
All India Handloom Board at the Ministry of Textiles. Perhaps her finest moment in recent
years, though, apart from dressing every single Indian beauty queen at the international
level, has been her unprecedented book, Costumes and Textiles of Royal India, which was
published by Christie's. |
