Priya T

Priya T a Hyderabad based designer, at 25, she is one of the latest designers in the Hyderabad fashion scene. Her fascination for designing started at the early age of 17 when she started assisting her father in the family business of supplying “Madura Coats” fabrics across Andhra Pradesh.  Priya is almost a workoholic, she is very enterprising and plans to carve her own niche in the city.

Creativity came to her as a child, as she realized this was the line where she wanted to learn more she joined NIFT Hyderabad. It proved out to be the right place for this creative designer, as along with creativity it also gave her the technical knowledge for this field. It was at NIFT where Priya was introduced to the traditional craft of our country, this is where she got an opportunity to study various crafts.

After completing her course, she worked for FFI, in Banglore, she wanted to come back home, which she did and worked for Kalanjali in Hyderabad, once again she got an opportunity to study the traditional Indian craft closely.

Her works reflect  traditional embroidery like Kutch work of Gujarat, Warli motifs and Chamba Rumal of Himachal Pradesh.

Her aim is to give her clients exclusive designer wear at affordable prices,  and her designed clothes are really affordable, with Indo-Western clothes being pegged at Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 each and ethnic wear ranging from Rs 2,800 to Rs 5,000.

She sources her fabrics directly from weavers, which gives her scope to be innovative, and also helps in the upliftment of craftsmen. “There are no middlemen involved and I get the freedom to experiment with my own designs,” says Priya. The designer is very finicky about the fit of her garments.

So in her eight people strong unit, she does all the patterns and cutting of fabric herself. So what were the problems she faced when she started off on her own?  “It was tough in the beginning, I hardly had any contacts,” says Priya.

“Even finance was a constraint, but now things are looking up,” she says optimistically. Does she find any time to pursue her hobbies which include Indian and Western classical music?

“Yes time is a constraint, but then I do take off sometimes to unwind once in a while,” replies the workaholic lady. Her future plans include opening her own boutique.

She wants to spend more time on fabric development. She is also interested in interior decoration. There is no doubt that all this lady needs is time to prove her self commercially, talent she has no dearth of.
