Telugu Vishwavidyalayam, the Telugu University was
established on December 2, 1985 by merging the existing state academies for literature,
music, dance, drama, fine arts and theatre. Renamed as Potti Sriramulu Telugu
Vishwavidyalayam, the university's objectives include promoting the study, research,
publication and spread of the Telugu language, literature and culture. A distinctive feature of this university is its state-wide
jurisdiction. 'Lalit Kalakshetram' situated in Baagh-e-aam or the Public
Garden, houses the main administrative office. The Lalit Kala Peetham is
devoted to the fine and performing arts and the Bhasha-abhivruddhi Peetham, for
the development of the Telegu language. The Department of Social and Other Sciences is
housed at the Samajika Tad-itara Shastrala Peetham while the Department of
Comparitive Studies is situated at Tulanatmaka Adhyayana Kendram . The university
has the International Centre for Telegu, called the Antarjatiya Telugu Kendram and
a centre which houses a collection of encyclopaedias, called the Vignyana Sarvasva
Kendra.
The 'library and the students' hostel are located at
Vidyanagar. The Telugu University also has departments for other subjects, outside
Hyderabad. Like in Bommur (for literature), Srisailam (for history, culture and
archeology), Warangal (for folk and tribal studies) and Kuchipudi (for dance). All
government schools and colleges of music and dance are affiliated to this university.
As the Telugu Vishwvidyalaya has absorbed various state
academies, it now has the responsibility of conducting various state functions and
festivals. It also decides upon and presents awards and sends and receives various
delegations, including international ones.
