BEGINNING FOR A KNOWLEDGE SOCIETY
By 2020, Andhra Pradesh will not just be a literate but a knowledge society fully capable
of meeting the challenges of the 21st century. It will be a State in which every person
will be able to realize his or her full potential through access to educational
opportunities regardless of the class or region to which he or she belongs. Andhra Pradesh
will offer its people a variety of opportunities to develop a rich base of skills that
industry can draw upon to build a competitive economy. With a progressive and well -
managed education system and many institutions of learning and skill building, it will
make an effective and complete transition into a knowledge society.
To achieve this vision, the primary goal for the State will be to steadily increase
literacy levels from the current 44% of the population to over 95%. This will require an
increase in adult literacy from the current 55% for males and 33% for females to over 95%
over all.
In other words, Andhra Pradesh will need to transform the current educational system so
that it can plan a catalytic role in the economy and society. Such system will meet the
following objectives:
* Ensure universal literacy by providing effective, high quality, and widespread
elementary education, non-formal education and an effective adult literacy
program
* Develop specific programs to promote education for girls.
* Focus secondary and higher education on building marketable skills.
* Actively involve the private sector in higher education.
* Manage and fund education more effectively, particularly through
community participation.
To meet the ever changing scientific scenario and the technologies, there is an immediate
need being met by the Government. A conscious effort is being made to bring symbiosis
between the Universities and the Industries who happen to be the end users of this skilled
manpower.
Training in skill development at various levels including at the Government level has been
taken up as a continuous process. There is an increasing demand for Boys and Girls with IT
background to match the changing IT environment.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh is establishing the State of Art Indian School of
Business and the Indian Institute of Information Technology with the main aim of bringing
out the right personnel with latest skills.
Initiatives for attracting private investments in the field of Higher Education and
specialist educational training are being encouraged. Affiliation with Universities abroad
are also actively pursued. |
