Mr.Vinod Reddy
Pub Tycoon

• There is absolutely no Nightlife in Hyderabad City.
• Established my 10 Downing Street to catch up with the growing MNC culture in the Hi-tech City.
• The year 1995 can be taken as an year of turnaround , when women folk readily welcomed new avenues of entertainment.
• It would better if the government identifies and categorizes PUBS instead of placing all the Pubs in the same track.
• The new avenues of entertainment should be made available to the newly emerging Corporate Class.
• It is a real Tough business, not at all glamorous.
• This business requires hands on experience and a perfect grip over the entire set of operations.

says the PUB Tycoon Mr. Vinod Reddy, Director of 10 Downing Street

Introducing 10 Downing Street

To cope with the Hi-tech aggrandizement in the Hyderabad city 10 Downing Street, the first of its sort Pub provides an entertaining area for the heterogeneous crowd in general and corporate crowd in particular.

The Pub is also famous for its excellent continental cuisine and first to introduce Pub Lunch as back as 2001 December. ‘The pub is the perfect place to grab a quick bite in the pleasant surroundings’ which also plays host to kitty parties.

khojhyd made an exclusive interview with this young & charismatic entrepreneur from the city in the light of Hyderabad city catching up the MNC & Corporate culture.

Excerpts from his interview:

What made you enter into this Pub Business?

I was in the restaurant business since 1982 with Shampru, the first Andhra Air Conditioned Restaurant in Reddy Hostel campus, Abids, Hyderabad.
Next step is entry into the Pub-arena with setting up the first
Pub in the city in 1989 at Amrutha Mall Somajiguda.
Proceeded with the setting up of 10 Downing Street in Swapna lok Complex Secunderabad 1991.

About 10 Downing Street

With the catching up MNC culture in the Hi-tech City of Hyderabad, I wanted to go in the British way of life by all means, hence christened 10 Downing Street.
Restarted in 2001 November in Life Style Building, Begumpet. This is the modified version of my Pub at Swapna lok Complex Secunderabad 1991 that was closed down due to Prohibition policy of the then government.

What is the 5 Downing Street?

It is just a package recently introduced to enable the Office goers who finish off their jobs by 5 or 6 to have a quick drink before they reach home. As per 5 Downing Street “just pay for one and get one free”.

Since you had emerged as the PUB tycoon for almost a decade and a half could you see any marked change in the attitude of Hyderabad crowd in the recent times?

Yes, the year 1995 can be taken as the breakeven. The idea of PUB as an exclusive place for men has been changed as more women started coming. This rational change in their attitudes made them more open and sociable. The women folk readily welcomed new avenues of entertainment.
Now it is also a family entertainment area with Pub Lunch.

How far the IT development contributed to the development of your PUB business?

Definitely, IT development paved way for the growth of MNCs and MNC culture in the city, which is directly proportional to the substantial increase in the corporate crowd.

How about the Nightlife in Hyderabad?

Every thing is perfect and wonderful in the city except for the nightlife.
There is absolutely no Nightlife in Hyderabad City.
We have no permission to serve the drinks beyond 12 PM.

Will this factor prevent the business & the other high-file visitor’s entry into the city?

Yes, that is what most of my friends from out side say that our city
is beautiful, peaceful and the people are warm, but the major drawback is the entertainment avenues are very much limited and restricted.

So, you mean to say that Pubs are permitted throughout night? Will that not affect the law & order situation?

No, what I intend is that if we were allowed to carry on the business till 1.30 then the customers will have some leisure time. We don’t mind paying extra for that extended hour one and a half. As such we are paying pretty good tax amounts to the govt.

Regarding the law and order situation, since the inception of my Pub, we are running in a totally pleasant atmosphere. It would better if the government identifies and categorizes PUBS instead of placing all the Pubs in the same track.

Our city is in the conversion process of a wonderful blend of tradition and modernity. Will this extended nightlife concept not affect the traditional culture of this historic city?

No it will never affect the traditional culture of the city. It is just a modern value added to the Hyderabadi culture.
That is why I had already said that with the changing attitude and life style, the new avenues of entertainment should be made available to the newly emerging Corporate Class.

Even the government is making a gigantic effort in improving the Tourism, did you ever approach the concerned authorities for improving nightlife so as to draw foreign & business visitors?

I made all the possible efforts, but in vain. The government might have had its own problems. My sincere plea is that the government should examine thoroughly and accord permission to the right Pubs.

How about your business outlets in the other cities?

Right now two, one in Pune established in the year 1993 and the other in Goa in 2002 October. My Pune PUB opens till 1.30 and Goa one opens throughout.
Planning to expand it to Bangalore city.

How tough is your business? What is your advice to those who want to enter into this?

It is a real tough business, not at all glamorous. All the time demands total concentration and vigil.

This business requires hands on experience and a perfect grip over the entire set of operations. If a person is under the impression that he could establish this business with an ‘Good Investment and an equally Good Manager’ It my Very Good Advice to coolly forget the entire idea, that’s all.
