Now, back to combinations and spreads.Tarot speaks what the situation is, what the greater and lesser influences are, what actions in the past have contributed to the situation and, given the current course of events and the energies now at work, what seems most likely to occur in the future. However, as far as outcomes are concerned nothing is ever absolute. What the Tarot provides us with so well is a "snapshot" view of a given situation, and as such it is momentarily static. These "snapshot" outcomes are, therefore, potentials, not givens. There is always a vast and dynamic field of potential and possibility in every situation! And, ultimately, it is our own perceptions, choices and actions that will make of our future what we will. Another of the beauties of the Tarot is that, beyond divination, working with the images of the Tarot can also help to illuminate our path with insight and new awareness in order to more consciously choose our course.
The exact way in which the Tarot works as a method of divination is beautifully multifaceted and complex. There have been volumes written on the many theories and, still, no one knows! The theory that I am most drawn to, though, is that the imagery and symbolic language of the Tarot stimulates a bridge of communication between our conscious and unconscious awareness, enabling us then to more easily approach the night-sky realm of our dreams, inspiration and intuition.
