VEEDHI NAATAKAM

Veedhi Natakam means a street play. It is a dramatic performance presented in a street. It is called ‘Bayalata’ in Rayalaseema. This has originated way back in 16th or 17th century, when the bhakti cult was in vogue in Andhra Pradesh. This was originally performed in temples on festive occasions. Now, with increased devotees witnessing the same, it is being performed on raised platforms facing the deity (the utsava vigraha).

A set of characters including the sutradhara and Vidhushaka introduce themselves to an audience and then perform. The dialogues are in the form of dance and songs and poems with song marking the entry of a major character. Vidhushaka adds a sense of humour to the show. Themes of human conflicts have been given the importance.
