NADASWARAM
Dating its origin to some 800 years back, Nadaswaram is considered
to be an auspicious instrument. Its
accompaniment, thus though not seen much in the concerts, is played for marriages,
ceremonies and processions.
Nadaswaram is in a conical shape enlarging
downwards, having around 7 finger holes with 5 holes drilled at the bottom to serve as
controllers. Of these five, one serves as an exit for surplus air. The instrument can be
made of Ebony, Red wood, Sandal wood, Ivory and Silver. The music played can be heard to
distance and thus are accepted to be announcing of the occasion.
