HYDERABAADI BANGLES
Yet another stand out item besides the
pearls at Hyderabad if to be spoken of, as a shoppers paradise would be the
Hyderabadi Bangles. Hyderabadi women from times unknown have ever loved to adorn
themselves with brightly coloured bangles and their elders just loved to hear the
"chan chan" of these
bangles.
With over a couple of hundreds of shops
around selling wide variety of bangles, Lad Bazaar or Chudi Bazaar as it is
widely known, near Charminar is the main market for what are specially known as Hyderabadi
Bangles. This is where bangle sellers weave a web of magic around your wrists. We are no
doubt talking about the lacquered bangles moulded out of pure lac and studded with
glittering gems and beautifully cut glass pieces of various colours. These Shellac bangles
form a must to wear jewelry for the brides in any typical Hyderabadi wedding.
The famous
Hyderabadi stone-studded lac bangles were actually said to have been introduced as
a craft to the Deccan by travelling mendicants called Hakims. It is their wives, in the 16th
century that were known to have made the bangles by studding lac or shellac bases with
multi-coloured stones.
This exquisite lacquer work coupled with
the Kundan and enamel adds to the beauty of the rich antique jewelry available at the
areas of Charkaman and Mitti-ka-Sher near Charminar. The grade of the glass
or gems used generally determine the quality and price of the bangles.
But just as a word of caution
if you
are a novice to this market it always is advisable to take along an experienced Hyderabadi
shopper or demand a receipt for your purchases. Lest should you be duped! Finding your
hands too sober without the bangles? Happy shopping then!
