NIRMAL PAINTINGS
Nirmal Painting is an admirable art
that can be dated back to the period of Kakatiyas, and is native to Adilabad district of
Andhra Pradesh. The craft known after the name of the village 'Nirmal' is pursued by a
concentration of artisans called "Nagash"
Craftsmen use indigenous colours made out
of minerals, gums and herbs to paint their imaginative motifs on a black background of
lacquered wood. The now familiar gold paint in this craft also is made out of herbal
extracts. Gods, goddesses and figures from folklore are the chief themes of this art.
Mughal miniatures are a fascinating fare and one of its kind. Soft, white Ponniki
wood is strengthened with coatings of tamarind paste, fine muslin and pipeclay before
being painted.
The Art once patronised by the Mughal Rulers in 14th century was brought to
Hyderabad by Ms Lady Hydery, who promoted the craft. Today the artisans of the Craft may
be seen housed for promoting the craft, in Nirmal Industry, a Unit managed by the Andhra
Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd., at Hyderabad.

The household and office decoratives and furniture in Rajastani and French style
sofa-sets, partition screens, rocking chair, trollies, deewan etc., besides various
utility items like vases, lamp shades, trays, cigar boxes are the artifacts of grace.
Others include painted toy figures of birds, animals, fruits, etc. |
