MEENAKARI

Meenakari is a unique style of enameling that involves fixing or fusing different coloured glazes onto the surface of the metal. The technique that was formerly used to protect gold, which in pure state is soft, malleable and easily wears away, has slowly                                                    emerged as an artifact.

Meenakari involves hollowing out a recess in the surface of gold or silver to take in a mineral that is then fired into the depression so as to leave a thin line separating the segments of colour. Floral patterns coloured in red, green and blue are commonly seen. Meenakari artifacts may be commonly seen in the range of kumkum boxes, anklets, key chains and other small jewelry.
