AJANTA PAINTINGS
Ajanta Paintings are yet another marvelous legacy of artistic wealth left
behind by the Buddhists. These masterpieces in the rocks of panoramic Indhyadri hillsides
attract millions of people from all over the world.
It appears as though the artists of
Ajanta have never once failed eulogise the beauty of nature in their paintings. This is
particularly true with women, the epitome of natures beautiful creation who find a
special place in these paintings.
The fresco paintings that adorned the Ajanta caves were grossly neglected with the
decline of Buddhism. It was later during the Nizams reign that the paintings at
Ajanta have got a new release to life. To preserve the authentic specimens, an
Archeological Dept. was created in 1914 by the Nizams govt. and two great artists,
Khan Bahadur Syed Ahmed and Jalaluddin were appointed to copy the paintings with greater
finesse than before.
Today, over
twenty of the two hundred replicas of the masterpieces at Ajanta are kept on display at
the State Archeological museum at Hyderabad. These paintings are an attraction for
thousands of art lovers all parts of the country! |
