SITA RAMA KALYANAM - Bhadrachalam

Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Kalyanam
at Bhadrachalam, an age-old ritual initiated by the great saint composer Bhaktha Ramdas himself way back in the 17th century, is still in vogue. With the devotion being at its peak, the event seem to be very much bent on replicating the grandeur of the actual wedding that might have occurred way back in Treta Yuga.

With a huge platform laid up and thousands of pilgrims crowded at the venue listless of the scorching heat of the summer, Sita Rama Kalyanam is held on the day if Chaitra Suddha Navami coinciding with the punarvasu star and the karkataka lagna between 10.30 am and 1.30 pm. The idols all bedecked with special ornaments are brought into the much decorated kalyanamantapam by the purohits, who perform all the rituals with a lively commentary.

The special ornaments to be emphasised on would include Chintaku patakam of Sita, kalikiturai of Rama, Mutyala Patakam of Lakshmana, Pacchala Patakam of Bharatha and the Mohireela Molatadu of Sathrughna that are all rendered by Bhakta Ramadas. And then is the Mangala sutram of Sita unlike others, seen with three sutras each said to be made by Janaka, Dasaratha and Ramdas respectively.

Upholding the tradition initiated by the then Golconda Ruler Tanashah, the Government of Andhra Pradesh till date customarily hands over the pearls for the ritual of Mutyala Talambralu. The commentators also make the viewers visualise the pearls to change colours to pink rubies as held in the hands of Sita and Blue sapphires as poured over Rama. All said and done, the event gives a hearty feeling to one and all.

With both the Doordarsan and AIR airing it live on the eve today, but for those pilgrims in the scorching summer heat trying to comfort themselves with the hand-operated fans at the Mantapam, all others can have the privilege of experiencing the event right from their drawing rooms!
