SRI
KALAHASTI - SRI KALAHASTEESWARA |
About the Temple :
Srikalahasti is located near Tirupati in Chittoor district on the banks of River
Swarnamukhi. The ancient temple is dedicated to Shiva and is one of the Pancha
Bhoota Sthalams (temples celebrating Shiva as the embodiment of the primary elements).
Shiva here is identified as the embodiment of Air, the Vayulinga. The adjoining hill is
also referred to as "Dakshina Kailasam".
The other Panchabhootasthalas include Tiruvannamalai or
Arunachalam (Fire) - the Tejolinga, Chidambaram (Space/sky) the Aakasalinga,
Tiruvanaikkaval or Jambukeswar (Water) the Jalalinga and Kanchipuram (Earth)
the Prithvilinga respectively.
A shaft of wind is seen to be present near
the deity that makes a flame flicker continuously in the main temple that is worshipped as
the Vayulinga. However the main idol is that of Srikalahastiswara, a linga on to
which are embedded images of spider, snake and elephant.
