Sthalapuranam

Sthalapuranam :

Legend says that the nine temples of Bala, Kaumara, Arka, Veera, Viswa, Garuda, Swarga, Padma and Taraka Brahmeswara were actually built by Brahma. Hence is the name. It is also said that the six known sections of Hinduism – the Kaumara and other subsections have flourished here. It is known that there are fifty theerthas, eighteen mahatheerthas and sixty four Ghats at this place. The most sacred of these is the Papavinasa theertha.

Enclosed in the courtyard is also seen the Suryanarayana temple, dating back to the 9th century. This temple has embossed sculptures of the incarnations of Vishnu.  There also is a Narasimha temple with inscriptions from the period of Krishna Deva Raya of the Vijayanagar Empire.

The other temple of importance is the Papanatham temples built on the same banks. These are over 20 temples of varying sizes and styles and constitute the Papanasam.

The main goddess of Alampur is Jogulamba – the vedic Yogeswari. This is considered to be one of the eighteen Shaktipeetas. Other goddesses include Renuka or Ellamma, popularly worshipped for getting children.
