RAMZAN
|
 |
The Legend :
Legend has it that the revelation of Holy
Quran to the otherwise illiterate Prophet Mohammed has happened in this month of Ramadan.
The revelation is believed to have first come to him at the age of 40, in a cave at the
foot of Mount Hira in Mecca, through the angel Jibreel with the commands of Iqra
(read). It is held that Allah has chosen the Prophet to be His messenger and has given his
preaching in the form of Vahi (inspiration from God) that the Prophet
uttered the same in words spontaneously. It is this uttering that was jotted down by the
Prophets disciples and compiled into the Holy Quran, as a message from God to the
mankind, during the Ramadan month.
Holy Quran preaches the five fundamental
principles of Islam to be
 |
- Faith :
The declaration of La Ilaha
Muhammad-ur-Rasoolullah, i.e., there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his
Prophet.
- Prayer :
The observance of the obligatory prayers
(Namaaz) five times a day.
|
- Charity :
Distribution of 2.5% of ones possession
of an entire year among the deserving in the form of Zakaat ( Islamic alms-fee ).
- Fasting :
The observation of Rozah (fasts) during
the daytime in the month of Ramadan.
- Haj :
The performance of Haj ( Pilgrimage ) to Mecca, at
least once in a lifetime, if the financial and physical conditions permit.
It is thus held that Ramzan not only helps the mankind to
confront the hard realities of life like hunger, thirst and deprivation through the Rozah,
but also comes handy in inculcating a sense of discipline and declaration of
subservience to the laws of God, enumerated by the Holy Quran.
