RAKSHA BANDHAN
Sravana Pournima on the Lunar
Calendar, falling somewhere in the month of August, is celebrated as the festivity of
Raksha Bandhan celebrated by one and all across the country.
Rakhi :
Aptly named Raksha bandhan, literally a
"Tie of Protection", the festivity is an occasion to celebrate the bond of love
between a brother and a sister. Sisters tying a Rakhi to their beloved brothers as a
tradition marks the festival. It is thus also referred to as "Rakhi Pournami".
Rakhi goes a long way in reminding the
brother of his sister and vice versa however far off they both are. One can vouch for this
since the traditions have not died in spite of the globalisation taking away the brothers
and sisters across the oceans.
Rakhi was once creatively designed by the
sisters using exquisite zari, silk, plastic, semi-precious stones, embroidered cloth and
sequins. But, today the Rakhis are made available in exquisite designs and exhaustive
variety in the market.
