of Devayani
Devayani can be taken as the screen avatar of Savitri in Tamil cinema. Sari-clad and
sensitive, she personifies the virtues of womanhood in film goers' imagination. She is
exactly made for Cordelia-like roles, not for freakish costumes and bare-bosom episodes.
Her screen persona is that of a loving, caring woman. Only a few before her, like Radhika,
Revathi, Suhasini and Urvasi were considered the earlier versions of "model
woman" on screen. Her debut film in Tamil "Thottal Chinungi" spoke little
of her present day legacy. She was cast as a glamorous doll in that film by Director
Adhiyaman. But the role of Kamali in "Kadhal Kottai"(Prema Lekha in
Telugu) once for all, changed the image of her screen persona. Thereafter
she is being tipped for roles of an instinctive woman, in films like
"Marumalarchi" "Sooryavamsam, "Swarnamuki" and "Neevaruvai
ena".
This Mumbai-born Keralite girl first thought of making her film entry in Hindi films. She
has signed up a film called "Goyal" in Hindi which never saw the light of the
day. Then "Thottal Chinungi' and a sexy dance sequence in "Sivasakthi"
happened, followed by the sensational "Kadhal Kottai". Devayani was reborn as
" Goddess of love" after the film was released. Tamil audience never complained
about her type-cast roles, instead they rooted for her in culture-conscious and lady-like
roles. She has already completed her first fifty films from acting in Tamil, Hindi,
Malayalam and Telugu films.
Though, she is in Kamal Hassan's "Tenali" she is paired up with Jeyaram in that
film. She is yet to play the leading lady's role opposite big - timers Rajinikanth and
Kamal Hassan. Latest hits of her include Vijaykanth starrer "Vallarasu" and the
critically acclaimed "Bharathi". She has given a clean-chit for herself as
Chellamma in Gnanashekaran's "Bharathi".
