The tough , macho guy who goes around busting all kinds of high stuff criminal conspiracies? And even if he sports a white beard, he has a bevy of sizzling girls hankering for him? Well. ..If that is what you expect when you go to see Finding Forrester, you will be disppointed. Having said this, let me hasten to add that in Finding Forrester, you can see Sean in of his finest roles done in the recent past. The actor plays the role of a reclusive genius, William Forrester, one who after authoring a Pullitzer winning novel, goes into complete seclusion. The author is frustated with the world, especially with our tribe called critics , who say about “what is it that the author wanted to say” . So disillusioned is the man with the world that he shuts himself off in a third floor apartment in a not-so-priveleged part of New York and gets even his groceries and socks delivered at home. The sole passions left in his life are reading and bird watching, all from within his self-imposed confinement. Change in the life of this person comes from Jamal Wallace, a black adolescent who has a talent in playing good basketball, as much as in creative writing. The story of the movie is about how this young boy sneaks into the apartment of the old genius (and his life) and tries to break the confinement that the latter has put himself into. In the process, the budding talent finds a god-send guide to show light to his creative skills. In fact, the task of the young boy becomes more real as he is given the assignment to do some work on the writings of Forrester himself. The boy does so with all assiduity and is even given tacit support by the author in the same. The climax of the movie comes when the old genius cycles all his way from his apartment to Jamal’ s creative writing school, just to read out a piece written by his young counterpart - one which was disqualified by his Professor at school on the grounds of lack of originality. To sum up, this is a film which has some rare subtly powerful moments, enacted too well by Sean Connery and also the young Boy – Rob Brown. Even the part played by Anna Paquin, the girl who courts the talented Jamal is sensitive and sweet, and enhances the tender quality of themovie. This is a kind of a movie which does not come too often from Hollywood…a must see, if you like its kind. |
