Cartoon of the Day

Devi Putrudu

Right from the days of Indiana Jones, Indian myths have fascinated the moviemakers. With the advent of computers and graphics, it has become all the more easy to portray the eye-catching special effects on the celluloid. The Tollywood producers joined the bandwagon of special effect movies and are experimenting with different types of stories. The success of 'Ammoru' has kept the producers interested in the genre. The latest move Devi Putrudu falls into this genre and seeks to play the same old tricks, albeit without much success.Dwaraka, the birthplace of Krishna, is a land of several myths. On every Amavasya day, a whirlpool with strong currents is witnessed in the see on the coast of Dwaraka.

He Balaram(Venkatesh) is an archeologist who is out to unearth the secret behind the whirlpool. He strongly believes that there is no supernatural force working and wants to unearth the principle behind the phenomenon for the benefit of the country. But he is always discouraged by his colleagues who laugh at his project. His wife Soundarya also has reservations about the project. But undaunted by this, Balaram ventures into sea and gets sucked into the whirlpool in a bid to know the secret. He lays his hands on a luminous box and brings it out.

Now an international mafia sets its eyes on the box as it is seen to posse's extraordinary supernatural powers. But Balaram is not ready to give into their pressure. One day, the box opens itself to him and reveals its Godliness. Now the archeologist is firmly convinced that the box should be put back into the sea failing which calamities would strike earth. But the international mafia who is out to lay their hands on the box foils his efforts. They kidnap pregnant Soundarya and try to blackmail her husband. But Venkatesh refuses to give in and dies after falling into a deep gorge in a bid to escape from the mafia. But Soundarya knows where the box is.

Hence the mafia detains her in a bid to extract the information. She is beaten black and blue but she is adamant to reveal the secret. And in the process her baby dies in the womb itself. The dead infant moves around the area in search of a person who will free her mother and complete the mission of her father. There is a parallel story in which another Venkatesh plays the role of a vagabond and finds himself in Dwaraka. He runs into Anjala Jhaveri, who is in search of her sister Soundarya. The little girl selects the vagabond to complete her mission. The role of little girl will come in for appreciation.

The producer is torn between the conflicting demands of a commercial movie. One has to accord an important role to super natural forces if the graphics are to be made use of. But there has to be enough role for a hero and his duets with heroines. But the story may get damaged in the process of reconciling these contradictory demands. That is what has precisely happened to the story. Music by Mani Sharma is average. Venkatesh and Soundarya have done well and Anjala looks extremely gorgeous. The highlight of the movie its graphics. And the main drawback is its faulty direction and lack of mass appeal. The movie can be watched once.
