AKS, a review

Main Cast : Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai, Raveena Tandon, Nandita Das.

Music : Anu Malik

Cinematography : Kiran Deohans

Finally it has come – the much awaited Aks. A joint production of AB Corps and Fliks Motion Pictures, it must be admitted at the very start that Aks is a movie in which the director Rakesh Omprakash Mehra has been successful in achieving near-international standards – at least from the technical and presentation point of view. Having said that it must also be mentioned that there are certain areas in the film which fails to meet the expectations that the audience may have – the story telling part of it, for example.

The story of Aks is inspired by two foreign films – Face Off and Fallen. Meant to be an edge-of-the seat thriller, Aks depicts the tale of a killer and a saviour, a hunter and the hunted. The Big B, Amitabh Bachchan ,plays the role of the Head of Security of the Indian Government who is briefed by the Defense Minister about an extra senstitive issue pertaining to the security of the nation . This revealation comes to the Security Head under the camouflage of a diplomatic trip to Budapest, the capital of Hungary. But this briefing is not the only one which Manu Verma receives. Special intelligent sources have revealed to him the Defense Minister faces a life threat from a lone and dangerous assassin, Raghavan. ( Manoj Bajpai). Inspite of his knowing, Manu Verma fails to protect his Minister. He reaches the Embassy too late, to find the Minister in a pool of blood. The killer has done his job and fled….

From now on, the film captures the dynamics of a man-to-man fight, between Manu Verma and the assassin Raghavan. The hunt for the killer turns into an obsession of Manu Verma, and he succeeds too in capturing him. Raghavan, the killer is put under trial and sentenced to death. The last twist and the climax to the movie comes one day before the exceution order of Raghacan. The lethal criminal tries to make an escape and in the bid levels his gun at Manu Verma. The latter draws his gun too….And both their guns explode !! To know more than this, you must watch the film yourself.

Seen from a critical angle, the film is technically brilliant. The cinematograpy is perhaps one of the best made in recent times and the visual impact that the film has easily matches international standards. The only areana where the film falters is in its narration. The film sags and downs the suspense in certain spots due to weak story telling. But what it lacks in this is made up well by timely tunes and their superb picturasation. The music of the movie, done by Anu Malik, is for once original and good.

Coming to the acting part of it, the Big B does live up to expectations. The megastar is seen in his very best at the fiilm, and his delivery of dalaogues , as well as the pauses are really worth seeing. So also is the taut performance given by Manoj Bajpai, who has very convincingly brought out the ruthlessness and the instincts of a killer. Talking about the female roles, Raveena looks bewitching and Nandita acts her usual self – sweet, sensitive and intelligent.

On the whole, this is a film not to be missed out .Rakesh Mehra is certainly a man to be watched out in his future ventures., considering the good work that he has done in Aks.
