Moulin
Rouge, a Movie Preview By now there is
a established tradition in the Indian Hindi movie scenario. If there is something good
going on in Hollywood, just ape it. The aping may come via copying the story, hijacking
the tunes and even lifting the screenplay sequences, scene after scene. Well, for a change there is something in Hollywood which tries to reverse the trend. Mouline Rouge attempts to take much of the Hindi pot-boilers and its melodramatic stuff, including a musical number Chamma Chamma The story of the movie goes somewhat like this Satine ( Nicole Kidman ) is a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge. The lady falls in love with a talented writer ( Mcgregor) and stars in a play sponsored by a Duke. The Duke too is infatuated with the charm of the courtesan. When he comes to know about the love affair between the courtesan and the writer, he calls back Satine, the courtesan. The story has a tame happy ending, like that in a typical Hindi movie. What the story spins is one of mad love and jealousy, enacted well in parts by the actors and actresses. The attraction of the movie is the way in which the Indian spice of Hindi cinema has been served - the Western way. There is a lot of colour in the movie ( the sets have been done very well, indeed ) and also much of sound, with a mish-mash of Madonna style pops and other Western music. One added attraction of the movie is of course Nicole Kidman herself. And unlike her usual silent expression and killing demeanour, this time one can watch her out a lot of expressions on her face. On the whole, this can be a likeable movie, if one has a taste for the entertainment spice that India is so famous for !!
